Description

65,000.00 GBPWilco Aviation is delighted to present for sale this exceptionally rare, meticulously maintained, and much-loved de Havilland DH.82C Tiger Moth available exclusively through us and currently based at a discreet private airstrip on the scenic South Coast of England.

The de Havilland Tiger Moth, first introduced in 1931, was purpose-built as a primary training aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Over the following fifteen years, the DH.82 became the principal training platform for both military and civilian pilots across the Commonwealth. As one of the key aircraft of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, it played a pivotal role in preparing aircrew during the Second World War. Between 1938 and 1948, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) operated over 1,500 Tiger Moths as part of this monumental effort.

The Canadian-built DH.82C variant featured several significant modifications over its British DH.82A counterpart. These included a jettisonable cockpit canopy, integrated cockpit heating, wheel brakes, a tailwheel in place of a tailskid, and a more powerful engine. The prototype DH.82C took to the skies for the first time in March 1940 from Downsview, near Toronto, Ontario. Although these adaptations added both weight and drag rendering the Canadian version somewhat less agile they made the aircraft far more suitable for Canada s challenging climate and varied terrain.

Tiger Moths, along with Fleet Finches, provided the backbone of elementary flight training for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan until mid-1942. Tiger Moths outnumbered Finches by more than three to one and were also employed in the basic training of radio operators. Notably, No. 10 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) at Mount Hope trained countless aircrew on Tiger Moths throughout the war. In total, approximately 7,800 Tiger Moths were built for the RAF and other Allied forces, with 1,550 manufactured in Canada between 1937 and 1944.

This particular DH.82C has been sympathetically maintained to an exceptionally high standard and benefits from practical enhancements for modern-day operation. Most notably, a starter motor has been fitted to facilitate single-person operation an invaluable addition that eliminates the need for hand-swinging the propeller. It also features an almost-new battery, offering reliable and hassle-free starting.

For prospective buyers new to the type, conversion training can be arranged at cost, delivered by experienced Tiger Moth instructors familiar with the nuances of this historic aircraft.

Today, only around 300 Tiger Moths remain airworthy worldwide of which some 40 are still flying in Canada making this example a truly unique opportunity for collectors, pilots, and aviation enthusiasts alike.
